Essential Leadership Skills for Success
Leaders go first, but they also eat last. Leaders inspire but also get out of the way of their people. There are many definitions of leadership, and we often tend to stick to the ones that are more inspiring or resonate with us more. One of my favourite quotes is not actually a definition but does carry both the qualities I mentioned above:
When I talk to managers, I get the feeling they are important;
– Alexander Den Heijer
when I talk to leaders, I get the feeling I am important.
To be a leader is to, first and foremost, think about others. Leaders inspire and mobilise towards a vision, and leaders grow people around them (and they become leaders themselves), multiplying their vision and effectiveness (think recursively here).

Leadership skills for success
This article kicks off a series where I introduce eight leadership skills and behaviours that make a leader great. We’ll be diving deep into each of these in upcoming articles.
1) Listening
The most essential leadership skill is the ability to listen actively, and it is at the heart of every great leader. This skill involves not just hearing the words but also understanding the underlying emotions and perspectives. Leaders who actively listen build trust, foster open communication, and create an inclusive workplace where every voice is valued.
2) Coaching and Mentoring
Successful leaders understand the importance of coaching and mentoring (the natural next steps following listening skills) to unlock the full potential of their team members. Through mentoring, the leader imparts knowledge by guiding, advising, and sharing insights from personal experiences. Conversely, coaching involves guiding team members to discover solutions on their own, fostering confidence and personal growth.
3) Developing Others
Developing others is a critical leadership behaviour. Great leaders focus on more than personal success; they are committed to developing the next generation. By investing time and resources in mentoring and providing growth opportunities, leaders create an environment where team members have a sense of belonging and want to stay, contribute and give back.
4) Vision
A visionary leader can articulate a compelling vision for the future. This skill involves having a clear picture of the destination and communicating it in a way that inspires and motivates the entire team. A well-defined vision acts as a guiding light, aligning efforts and cultivating a sense of purpose among team members.
5) Facilitation
An underrated leadership skill is facilitation. A well-facilitated meeting or workshop drastically reduces time, increases collaboration, and improves the quality of the decisions made. It involves designing, preparing, anticipating potential setbacks, and running meetings effectively. A skilled facilitator ensures that discussions are productive and lead to innovative solutions.
6) Continuous Improvement and Feedback
Leaders who master delivering feedback create an environment where team members feel valued and motivated to enhance their performance. But to get there, leaders go first; leaders should ask and welcome feedback with grace and gratitude. Feedback, given in the right way, is a gift, and leaders should create a psychologically safe environment where their people can provide feedback to their leaders. Timely and constructive feedback is the lifeblood of growth.
7) Host leadership
Host leadership, another leadership behaviour, is a dynamic approach that emphasises creating an inclusive and collaborative environment. Like a skilled host at a gathering, a leader practising host leadership invites diverse perspectives, encourages participation, ensures everyone feels valued, and is of service to team members, prioritising individual well-being. This skill involves facilitating open dialogue, empowering team members to contribute their unique strengths, and creating a sense of belonging. Host leadership transcends traditional hierarchies and extends servant leadership, emphasising the power of collaboration to achieve shared goals and drive organisational excellence.
8) Systems Thinking
Leadership goes beyond problem solving; it involves understanding the interconnectedness of various organisational components and how one problem may be the symptom of a deeper organisational issue. Leaders with solid systems thinking skills can analyse complex situations, identify patterns, and make informed decisions that benefit the entire system.
Mastering these eight leadership skills can be a transformative journey for any aspiring or seasoned leader. In the upcoming articles, we’ll explore each of these leadership skills in depth, providing insights and strategies for enhancing your effectiveness as a leader. Stay tuned for a journey into leadership excellence!
Throughout this series, the terms “leader” and “leadership” do not refer to a role or a position of authority in a company or organisation but to a behaviour or a set of skills that people and leaders possess. These skills can be learned, practised, and mastered.
