“Leadership is not about being in control. It’s about creating a vision, empowering, inspiring, and motivating people to achieve the vision.”
– Jack Welch
What sets great leaders apart? It’s not giving the right orders or micromanaging every detail. True leadership is about igniting a spark in others, guiding them towards a shared vision, and empowering them to achieve greatness. In this post, we’ll explore why vision is the most inspiring leadership skill and how it can transform teams and organisations.
Activity Illustration
Imagine this: you’re leading a group of Product Managers through a simple yet powerful exercise. Each group is tasked with drawing a beautiful summer meadow, armed only with blank sheets of paper and coloured markers. To add some pressure to the participants, they are given a short time to draw, from 90 seconds to 3 minutes. The activity is set up in a way that produces two types of results:

Did you notice how different the sets look from each other? The different results often surprise participants. But what they don’t know is that there are two sets of instructions, each responsible for the vastly different results. Looking at the two different instructions below, it’s easy to see which set of instructions produced which set of results:
Instructions #1:
Draw a beautiful summer meadow with:
- 10 blue flowers with 5 petals each
- 5 blue flowers with 6 petals each
- 13 red flowers with 6 petals each
- 2 cows with 3 black spots
- 1 cow with 5 black spots
- 2 cows with 4 black spots
- 2 birds to reside in the upper left corner
- 3 blue butterflies
- 3 birds in the middle
- 1 sun to the right with 5 sunbeams
- 3 red butterflies
- 40 blades of grass
Instructions #2
Draw a beautiful summer meadow with blue and red flowers in green grass, some cows and birds under a shining sun.
The Power of Vision
As the drawings reveal, the groups operating with a focus on the vision (Instructions #2) produced remarkably better results (Result Set #2) compared to those with detailed specifications instead (Instructions #1 and Result Set #1). This exercise underscores a fundamental truth: rallying people towards a vision is more impactful than dictating specific actions. It’s about fostering creativity, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose.
This translates into our work lives when managers and leaders prescribe a specific solution to their teams: “Build this feature”, “Write this report”, etc, without really giving the team a chance to understand what problem is the asked solution supposed to solve.
Instead of prescribing a solution, visionary leaders encourage their teams to focus on the problem itself. This mindset shift sparks innovation and opens the door to unconventional solutions. As the saying goes, “Be in love with the problem, not the solution.”
Visionary Leadership Traits
Alongside vision, effective visionary leaders embody several key traits:
- Clarity: They possess a clear understanding of their vision and can articulate it effectively to others.
- Storytelling: They go beyond mere communication, crafting compelling narratives that inspire action and commitment.
- Passion: Their unwavering enthusiasm for the vision is contagious, fueling motivation and dedication among team members.
- Persistence: In the face of challenges, they display resilience and determination, staying the course towards their goals.
- Stakeholder Engagement: They cultivate strong relationships and rally support from stakeholders, fostering a shared commitment to the vision.
- Delegation: By delegating authority and fostering autonomy, leaders empower their teams to contribute meaningfully to the vision’s realisation.
Conclusion
In the journey of leadership, vision serves as the guiding star, illuminating the path forward and inspiring others to follow. As you reflect on your own leadership journey, consider the role of vision in shaping your actions and influencing those around you. Embrace the power of vision, and watch as it transforms not only your team but the world around you.
